Parent Visa

Parent migration to Australia under the Contributory Parent visa class may be an option for anyone with at least one child living permanently in Australia.

To qualify for Parent migration to Australia, you must:

  • Be over 18 years of age
  • Pass the balance of family test, which states that you have at least half your children living in Australia or have an equal or greater number of children living in Australia than in any other single country.
  • Have at least one child who has been living and working in Australia for two years, and is currently on a permanent visa (this child will be your sponsor).

There are two visa options open to parents who meet the above criteria, and they are the Contributory Parent - Temporary, and Contributory Parent - Permanent.

Contributory Parent - Permanent (subclass 143)

 

This visa is suitable for parents of any age who meet the above criteria, and it allows parents to migrate permanently to Australia. Applicants (and their spouse and any other dependent family members) will:

  • have full working and study rights in Australia
  • have access certain social security payments (subject to waiting periods)
  • be eligible to apply for Australian citizenship (subject to the residency eligibility criteria)

Assurance of Support

Applicants for a Permanent Contributory Parent visa will be required to have an assuror in Australia who can complete an Assurance of Support, guaranteeing to support the applicant(s) financially for the first 10 years if required. Assurors must put down a bond (A$10,000 for the principal applicant, and a further A$4,000 for the spouse), which is refundable at the end of the 10 year period if unused. The assuror must be able to provide Australian tax returns for the last two years. The assuror does not have to be the same person as the sponsor.

The government fees for this visa are as follows:

  • $1,735 - Lodgement Fee
  • $37,965 - Payment upon grant of permanent visa

Contributory Parent - Temporary (subclass 173)

 

This is a temporary parent visa, valid for two years. At any time during the two year period, holders of this visa can apply to transfer to a Contributory Parent – Permanent (143) visa, provided they meet the criteria. Applicants must apply for the permanent visa before their temporary visa expires.

This visa allows the applicant (and spouse, and any dependents) to live and work in Australia. Holders of this visa will also:

  • have access to Australia's medical expenses and hospital care assistance scheme, Medicare
  • be able to study in Australia

The government fees for this visa are as follows:

  • $1,735 – Lodgement Fee
  • $22,780 – Payment upon grant of temporary visa.

When transferring from a Temporary to Permanent Contributory Parent visa, the fees are:

  • $235 – Lodgement Fee
  • $15,185 – Payment upon grant of permanent visa.

Applicants for a temporary visa are not required to have an assuror, until they wish to apply to transfer to a Contributory Parent – Permanent (143) visa. See the previous section entitled ‘Assurance of Support’ for details.

Contributory Aged Parent (Residence) Visa (Subclass 864)

 

This visa allows aged parents to remain in Australia permanently with their children who are living in Australia. This visa requires that you be sponsored by your child or another eligible sponsor in Australia.

This visa applies to you if you're both;

  • aged (65 or over)
    and
  • a parent of a child or stepchild who is a settled Australian citizen, settled permanent resident or settled eligible New Zealand citizen

and either;

  • at least half of your children are permanently resident in Australia
    or
  • you have more children living permanently in Australia than any other country

The government fees for this visa are as follows;

  • $2, 575 - Lodgement Fee
  • $37, 965 - Payment upon grant of permanent visa

Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 884)

 

This visa allows aged parents to remain in Australia permanently with their children who are living in Australia. You must be sponsored by your child, or another eligible sponsor in Australia.

This visa is for you if you hold a Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 884) and want to apply for a permanent visa Contributory Aged Parent (Migrant) visa (subclass 864).

Your partner and other family members may be included in your application if they meet certain requirements also.

The government fees for this visa are the following;

  • $2, 575 - Lodgement Fee 
  • $22, 780 - First Instalment
  • $15, 185 - Second Instalment
