CHANGES TO STUDENT VISA WORK ARRANGEMENTS

From the 26 April 2008, people granted student visas will receive permission to work along with their visa grant. This replaces the previous arrangement whereby people had to apply for permission to work separately in Australia. These changes apply to both the primary student and any accompanying family members; however the working restrictions on student visa holders and their families remain unchanged.

Students and their families are not allowed to work until the student begins their course. Students can work up to 20 hours a week during term time, and unlimited hours during course holidays. Families of student visa holders are limited to working 20 hours a week at all times, except if the student is studying a masters or doctorate course.

This new visa arrangement is hoped to save student visa holders hassle, by granting the visa and working rights together.

SKILLED PROCESSING TIMES LENGTHENED

The Head of Skilled Migration announced on Monday that in August 2007 the Department of Immigration and Citizenship received approximately 12,000 applications for skilled visas - three times their monthly average.

We expect this means that processing times will be lengthened significantly, and applicants who lodged in August 2007 can now expect to have to wait 9 or 10 months from lodgement for their visas to be approved.
